Samir Nasri (born 26 June 1987) is a French footballer who plays for Arsenal in the Premier League and the France national football team.
A youth product of Marseille, Nasri plays primarily as a winger, although he has also been deployed in central midfield in the absence of Cesc Fàbregas due to injury. During his time at boyhood club Marseille, Nasri's Algerian background, technical prowess and playmaking on the field earned him direct comparisons to French football great Zinedine Zidane – and the mantle of the 'French Pele'.In December 2010, he was named the French Player of the Year for his performances during the calendar year.
Nasri was a regular for France at the youth level and was a member of the country's UEFA Euro 2008 squad, though he saw limited playing time.

Early life

Nasri's parents moved to France from Algeria. His father is from Constantine and his mother is a native of Biskra. Nasri grew up in La Gavotte Peyret,a northern suburb of Marseille. He often played on the streets, where he learned many of his skills. His parents signed him up to the football club Pennes Mirabeau at the age of six. He spent two seasons at Pennes before being scouted by Olympique de Marseille in 1996.

Club career

Marseille

Nasri began playing with Marseille when he was 17 years old. He started playing in Ligue 1 in the 2004/2005 season at the age of 17, where he started 13 games and came on as a substitute in 11 games, scoring one goal. The next season got him experience in both the UEFA Cup (10 games; no goals) and the Intertoto Cup (one game; one goal). In the 2006/2007 season he scored his first goal of the year in Ligue 1 late in the season on 29 April 2007, when he started the match against Sochaux-Montbéliard and helped his team to a 4–2 victory. This win allowed Marseille to climb into fourth place with just four games remaining, putting them into the UEFA Cup qualifying spot. Nasri was part of the squad that lost in the Coupe de France final in 2006 versus Paris Saint-Germain and he also lost in the 2007 final against Sochaux.
On 20 May 2007, Nasri was named French Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year ahead of Jimmy Briand and Karim Benzema. He was voted Marseille's player of the year by the fans, receiving 62% of the votes. In addition, like many, he was dubbed the "new Zizou" for his vision and dribbling skills.

Arsenal

Premier League club Arsenal had been tracking Nasri and moved quickly to head off rival bids from Real Madrid and Inter Milan and a bid of £12.5 million was enough to convince Marseille about his transfer with him signing a four-year contract. Nasri scored in his Premier League debut against West Bromwich Albion with a close range effort, after four minutes of the first game of the season, on 16 August 2008.On 27 August in the 3rd Qualifying Round 2nd Leg against FC Twente, Nasri scored in the 26th minute. He scored his third goal of the season in the 3–1 over Everton on October 18, 2008. Nasri missed the early part of the 2009–10 season with a broken leg that was picked up in the summer. On 9 March 2010 Nasri culminated an excellent display in Arsenal's 5–0 victory over Porto in the Champions League with a superb individual effort, dribbling past the Porto defence before driving it across the goalkeeper, sending the ball in off the far post. On 3 May 2010, he played the full 90 minutes in a 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Nasri concluded his second season at Arsenal with 34 games, 5 goals, and 5 assists.

Arsenal confirmed after the draw that Nasri had suffered a knee injury that would keep him out for one month, but the play-maker made a speedy recovery after just three games to be named as a starter for the Champions League opener against Sporting Braga. He helped Arsenal defeat the Portuguese side 6–0. Nasri then scored his first and second goals of the season from penalties during extra time in Arsenal's Carling Cup win against main rivals Tottenham at White Hart Lane. On 25 September 2010, Nasri scored a brace in Arsenal's disastrous 3–2 home defeat by the hands of West Brom, this was his fourth goal in two games. Nasri continued his fine form coming on as a substitute in Arsenal's midweek Champions League 3–1 away win against FK Partizan and he made his first assist of the season to his French compatriot Sébastien Squillaci from a corner late in the second half; this was also Squillaci's first goal for his new club. On 4 December, Nasri scored two outstanding goals against Fulham FC to give Arsenal a 2-1 win and top spot in the Premier League. The latter marking his 8th goal in the Premier League, his 11th of the season. With this goal, he falls just one goal short of his combined goal tally for Arsenal during the course of his first two seasons with the club(12 goals in total). Nasri also scored in Arsenal's vital last group game in the UEFA Champions League group stage against Partizan Belgrade which Arsenal won 3-1. He scored his 13th goal of the season in the 3–0 win against Birmingham City on New Year's Day 2011.
